North Cave Wetlands – 24/01/2018

Sunset at the WetlandsAn overcast afternoon, slowly brightening to sunny conditions. Fresh South-westerly breeze blowing with temperatures around 7 degrees C. A brief check over Village Lake found the Ruff Calidris pugnax still present, accompanied by several Redshank Tringa totanus. Walking along the Lane, the pair of Stonechat Saxicola rubicola were also on form, both perched on the fence dividing Cell B & C of Dryham Ings. On Main Lake a Pink-footed Goose Anser brachyrhynchus was in with the Greylag Goose Anser anser flock. Moving on to Carp Lake the drake Mandarin Duck Aix galericulata was active at the rear of the lake. At Crosslands Hide a pair of Green Woodpecker Picus viridis were showing well, the male not moving from his fence post for at least 20 minutes. A single Snipe Gallinago gallinago and Kingfisher Alcedo atthis were also present on Cell A. Quiet along the western and northern parts of the reserve, only a Curlew Numenius arquata in North Field being of note. Final stop was Island Lake, which was fairly quiet, until the highlight of the visit dropped in at around 3:30pm, two pairs of Goosander Mergus merganser . They went to roost on their regular island almost straight away, though were flushed by a Curlew N. arquata dropping in, pushing them back on to the water, where they stayed for some time.
