North Duffield Carrs – 01/02/2018

North Duffield CarrsNorth Duffield Carrs from Garganey Hide

Overcast early afternoon visit finally giving way to a heavy shower, moderate westerly breeze blowing, temperatures around 6 degrees C. A brief visit to this section of the Lower Derwent Valley. Light was poor and with most of the birds being distant, none were photographed. There were two groups of Whooper Swan Cygnus cygnus present, 32 on the Carrs and 25 in the fields to the south, adjacent to Derwent Cottage Farm. Hundreds of Teal Anas crecca and Wigeon Anas penelope present, with Pintail Anas acuta also noted into double figures. A Marsh Harrier Circus aeruginosus flew through heading west and a Sparrowhawk Accipiter nisus headed north along the Derwent. Three Bullfinch Pyrrhula pyrrhula were in the trees between the two hides. A Barn Owl Tyto alba was found at the east end of Bubwith, hunting just after mid-day.
