North Cave Wetlands – 01/02/2018

A morning visit, starting out bright before clouding over, a moderate westerly breeze made for a chilly morning, temperatures around four degrees C. Village lake continued to host the Ruff Calidris pugnax, with a Green Woodpecker Picus viridis below the viewing platform and also along the path to Turret Hide. A single Redwing Turdus iliacus was present along the eastern path. Scanning the ridge from Turret Hide found two Red Kite Milvus milvus further to the north. A more unusual sight was a flock of Stock Dove Columba oenas of at least 44 birds in the north-west field. Probably the same flock was then seen after I’d left the reserve heading for South Cliffe, the flock even larger than I’d seen at Cave, nearly double the size. Only used seeing this species in single figures. The Mandarin Duck Aix galericulata was still in situ on Carp Lake, where the flock of Siskin Spinus spinus were also found in the south-east corner. Eight Oystercatcher Haematopus ostralegus now back on site making use of both the Silt Pond and Cell A of the Ings. On Main Lake 49 Redshank Tringa totanus were roosting on the north bank and a single Great Crested Grebe Podiceps cristatus was also noted.
