North Cave Wetlands – 12/02/2018

An afternoon visit with intermittent sun and gentle south-westerly breeze, temperatures around four degrees C. Two Snipe Gallinago gallinago showed well below Crosslands Hide on Cell C of Dryham Ings, always nice to see this species well. Eight Oystercatcher Haematopus ostralegus also present here, with the Green Woodpecker Picus viridis also making an appearance. On leaving the hide the drake Mandarin Duck Aix galericulata flew over the Lane and dropped down onto Carp Lake for a few minutes, before departing. A Kingfisher Alcedo atthis was on Far Lake. The drake Green-winged Teal Anas carolinensis was on Island Lake though mainly sleeping. A Marsh Harrier Circus aeruginosus flew through flushing all the Teal Anas crecca onto the water, however the Green-winged Teal A. carolinensis sat tight with a female, unperturbed by the present danger. The Ruff Calidris pugnax was still making the most of the slowly submerging island on Village Lake.
