North Cave Wetlands – 16/02/2018

A late morning to early afternoon visit. hazy sunshine with a light south-westerly breeze, temperatures around six degrees C. The drake Green-winged Teal Anas carolinensis was present on Island Lake late morning, showing well in the morning sun. A good ‘raptor’ day with six species observed including Peregrine Falco peregrinus, Red Kite Milvus milvus, Buzzard Buteo buteo, Marsh Harrier Circus aeruginosus, Kestrel Falco tinnunculus and Sparrowhawk Accipiter nisus. Wader-wise at least 13 Oystercatcher Haematopus ostralegus now back on the reserve. The Ruff Calidris pugnax continues its sojourn on Village Lake with a few Redshank Tringa totanus, the latter species now spread out around the reserve. Two Snipe Gallinago gallinago were also on Village Lake. Good numbers of Stock Dove Columba oenas around the site perimeter with 17 in fields to the east and six in the stubble field to the north. At the latter location at least 60 Skylark Alauda arvensis were also present. Elsewhere the drake Mandarin Duck Aix galericulata was on Carp Lake; Green Woodpecker Picus viridis was in the field near the entrance; Goldcrest Regulus regulus and Redwing Turdus iliacus were along the eastern path.
