North Cave Wetlands – 27/02/2018

Dryham LaneDryham Lane

A wintry scene at the wetlands with snow on the ground. Sunny conditions interspersed with snow showers, a gentle north-easterly breeze blowing, temperatures around one degree C. On Village lake the long-staying Ruff Calidris pugnax was still present, along with several other waders including 13 Snipe Gallinago gallinago, several Redshank Tringa totanus and four Oystercatcher Haematopus ostralegus. Three Redwing Turdus iliacus and a Song Thrush Turdus philomelos were feeding in the loose leaf litter just north of the hide on East Path. The drake Green-winged TealĀ Anas carolinensis was still in situ on Island Lake, in its favoured spot by the heap of cut vegetation. Two Curlew Numenius arquata were also present here. Marsh Harrier Circus aeruginosus and Buzzard Buteo buteo were along the northern edge of the reserve. Along Dryham Lane a couple of Goldcrest Regulus regulus were in the hedge near Carp Lake, whilst good numbers of Tree Sparrow Passer montanus were present at the feeders, along with a male Reed Bunting Emberiza schoeniclus. Finally a Green Woodpecker Picus viridis was found along the lane, finishing off with a pair from the viewing platform, where they showed well.
