North Cave Wetlands – 11/03/2018

A late morning to early afternoon visit, mainly overcast with a light easterly breeze, temperatures around ten degrees C. Three Avocet Recurvirostra avosetta were back on Village Lake, my first of the year. Two Mediterranean Gull Larus melanocephalus were also here, one shown in the photo below and a second bird with an almost complete hood. The drake Green-winged Teal Anas carolinensis was still present on Island Lake near the first heap of cut vegetation. Five Little Egret Egretta garzetta were in the new workings to the west, at one point four were perched in the tree holding the owl box. A Goldcrest Regulus regulus was found along the western path, with several Siskin Spinus spinus still present, some coming down to the feeders. On Main Lake a single Curlew Numenius arquata was in the north-east corner, with a further three also noted flying east at the rear of the lake. A Red Kite Milvus milvus flew west over the reserve. The only insects noted were two 7-spot Ladybird Coccinella septempunctata on the fence post along the Maize Field.
