North Cave Wetlands – 24/03/2018

An overcast afternoon with occasional light rain, light northerly breeze with temperatures around nine degrees C. The winter plumage Black-necked Grebe Podiceps nigricollis was still present on Main Lake, though always in the northern half of the lake. Two Whooper Swan Cygnus cygnus were also present here when I started my visit, though they had departed by the time I returned at around 4pm. Managed to get some shots of one of the “pink-breasted” Black-headed Gull Chroicocephalus ridibundus which shows how striking these birds are. Finally here the Pink-footed Goose Anser brachyrhynchus dropped in late afternoon. The Ruff Calidris pugnax was still to be found on Village Lake, with 11 Avocet Recurvirostra avosetta also present, along with the adult summer Mediterranean Gull Larus melanocephalus. Along the northern boundary of the reserve a Marsh Harrier Circus aeruginosus flew north, possibly the same bird seen later, on Dryham Ings. Two Curlew Numenius arquata were in North Field, with around 25 Fieldfare Turdus pilaris also noted. Corn Bunting Emberiza calandra was a new year tick, singing from its favourite spot in the north-west stubble field. Little Owl Athene noctua was another year tick, present in trees near the farm to the west of the reserve. Finally a Buff-tailed Bumblebee Bombus terrestris was active along the northern hedge, even though it was raining at the time.
