North Cave Wetlands – 01/04/2018

An overcast afternoon with occasional showers. Gentle northerly breeze with temperatures around five degrees C. A Red Fox Vulpes vulpes was the surprise highlight of the day with one present and showing well from Turret Hide. The only insect recorded on this less than ideal day was a single Buff-tailed Bumblebee Bombus terrestris along the western path. A pair of Common Toad Bufo bufo were present in the eastern Dragonfly Pond.

Bird-wise my first Chiffchaff Phylloscopus collybita of the year was feeding in the reeds below Turret Hide, with a second bird singing from the Butterfly Walk. A pair of Mediterranean Gull Larus melanocephalus were displaying on Island Lake, the pair consisting of an adult and 2nd summer bird. The Pink-footed Goose Anser brachyrhynchus was still on the scene, showing well in the field at the entrance of the reserve. Finally a Ruff Calidris pugnax was present in the field to the north.
