North Cave Wetlands – 31/08/2018

A sunny morning visit with a light south-westerly breeze, temperatures around 20 degrees C. Six species of Dragonfly still on the wing with Migrant Hawker Aeshna mixta present in good numbers. A single Southern Hawker Aeshna cyanea was along the western path with a few Brown Hawker Aeshna grandis also present around the reserve. Common Darter Sympetrum striolatum present, though not as numerous as some previous years. They’re also still emerging with an immature male found along Dryham Lane. Common Blue Damselfly Enallagma cyathigerum also still emerging with several immature individuals noted. Finally Blue-tailed Damselfly Ischnura elegans completes the list.

Five species of Butterflies recorded, Small Copper Lycaena phlaeas being new for the year. Other species included Comma Polygonia c-album, Common Blue Polyommatus icarus, Small White Pieris rapae and Speckled Wood Pararge aegeria. Common Grass-veneer Agriphila tristella and Silver Y Autographa gamma were the only moths recorded.

Beetle-wise four species of Ladybird recorded, two Adonis’ Ladybird Hippodamia variegata found along the path to Turret Hide. 22-spot Ladybird Psyllobora vigintiduopunctata, 7-spot Ladybird Coccinella septempunctata and Harlequin Ladybird Harmonia axyridis the others noted. Alder Leaf Beetle Agelastica alni still present along the western path from Far Lake viewpoint.

Very quiet on the Hoverfly front with only three species found, Eristalis tenax, Eupeodes sp. and Syritta pipiens.

Finally a Grass Snake Natrix helvetica was along the Western Path and a Stoat Mustela erminea was on the Northern Path.
