An overcast morning with a gentle northerly breeze, temperatures around 14 degrees C. The dull and overcast conditions meant that Dragonflies were on the scarce side. Single Migrant Hawker Aeshna mixta, single Common Darter Sympetrum striolatum and a few Common Blue Damselfly Enallagma cyathigerum the only species found.
Butterflies didn’t fare any better with only a single Speckled Wood Pararge aegeria noted. However the moths made up for that lack of butterflies with a smart Angle Shades Phlogophora meticulosa found along the north path and Blood-vein Timandra comae at the south end of Carp Lake. Common Marble Celypha lacunana and Acleris laterana/comariana were also noted.
Adult Shieldbugs are now starting to make an appearance with Spiked Shieldbug Picromerus bidens and Woundwort Shieldbug Eysarcoris venustissimus present along the car park verge. Other bugs included Cuckoo-Spit Insect Philaenus spumarius and Field Damsel Bug Nabis ferus.
A few more “hovers” on this visit compared to recent visits with Marmalade Hoverfly Episyrphus balteatus, Eristalis tenax, Eupeodes corollae, Eupeodes latifasciatus, Eupeodes luniger and a Platycheirus sp. Other Diptera included a pair of Coremacera marginata, plus Cranefly Ptychoptera contaminata.
Finally good numbers of 22-spot Ladybird Psyllobora vigintiduopunctata were along the Northern Path, with a few 7-spot Ladybird Coccinella septempunctata for company. Alder Leaf Beetle Agelastica alni were still present in the Far Lake viewpoint. A single Lesser Marsh Grasshopper Chorthippus albomarginatus was along the path to Turret Hide.
Finally a few birds get a look-in. A few waders were making the most of the reduce water levels on Island Lake, Greenshank Tringa nebularia being the highlight with Little Ringed Plover Charadrius dubius, Ringed Plover Charadrius hiaticula and Snipe Gallinago gallinago also present.
