North Cave Wetlands – 17/10/2018

An intermittently sunny morning visit, with a light westerly breeze. Temperature reaching around 14 degrees C.

Still a few Common Darter Sympetrum striolatum and Migrant Hawker Aeshna mixta around the site, a female of the latter species ovipositing in the Bulrush on the south side of Carp Lake.

A late Brown Argus Aricia agestis was a bit of a surprise along the northern path, still in good condition. Red Admiral Vanessa atalanta and Small Copper Lycaena phlaeas being the more expected fare for this time of year.

True Bugs provided the lions share of the insect fauna with six species found. Six Gorse Shieldbug Piezodorus lituratus were along Dryham Lane, along with three Green Shieldbug Palomena prasina. A Grey Damsel Bug Himacerus major was a nice find along Dryham Lane, whilst a Field Damsel Bug Nabis ferus was along the northern path. Tarnished Plant Bug Lygus rugulipennis and Corizus hyoscyami complete the list for this group.

Beetle-wise several 7-spot Ladybird Coccinella septempunctata and Harlequin Ladybird Harmonia axyridis were active around the site. A couple of Sphaeroderma testaceum were found along the northern path associating with the thistles.

On the birding front a Dunlin Calidris alpina was on Reedbed Lake. Two Coal Tit Periparus ater were in the north hedge. Several Siskin Spinus spinus were in the north-west corner. A Little Egret Egretta garzetta was showing well below Turret Hide where a Kingfisher Alcedo atthis put in a brief appearance, another also present on Carp Lake. Finally several skeins of Pink-footed Geese Anser brachyrhynchus passed over the reserve during the morning with a single bird present on Main Lake.
