North Cave Wetlands – 27/11/2018

A mixed morning of cloudy and sunny spells, with a gentle south-easterly breeze blowing. Temperatures reaching seven degrees C.

Wasn’t expecting to find any insects today, so two Green Shieldbug Palomena prasina along the western path was a nice surprise, both now attaining their winter colour.

Fifty-seven species of birds recorded on this visit. Highlight was the Peregrine Falco peregrinus which showed several times around the new workings, at one point sitting on a mound of earth, plucking an unlucky victim. A Ruff Calidris pugnax was on village lake, whilst several Golden Plover Pluvialis apricaria flew south over the reserve. A Water Rail Rallus aquaticus was on Main Lake in the reedbed in the south-east corner. The drake Mandarin Duck Aix galericulata was again on Carp Lake. Finally the Stonechat Saxicola rubicola was still present west of the Silt Lagoon.
