North Cave Wetlands – 20/01/2019

A sunny start to this mornings visit, before clouding over, with a light westerly breeze blowing. Temperature around four degrees C.

Eight-four Pink-footed Goose Anser brachyrhynchus heading north greeted my arrival at the Wetlands, my first for the year. Another year-tick was Yellowhammer Emberiza citrinella, several present at the west side of the new workings. The Peregrine Falco peregrinus was in its favoured trees to the north of the new workings. A couple of Lesser Redpoll Acanthis cabaret were in the trees in the south-east corner of Carp Lake, whilst the female Goldeneye Bucephala clangula was still resident on Far Lake. Finally the Ruff Calidris pugnax was again on Village Lake, eventually moving over to Cell A on Dryham Ings. Two Brown Hare Lepus europaeus were active in the fields to the west of the reserve.
