North Cave Wetlands – 06/02/2019

A bright morning with light cloud, a light south-westerly breeze blowing. Temperature around 5 degrees C.

A pleasant morning walk around the reserve with 60 species of birds recorded, four of these were year-ticks for the reserve. Two Black-tailed Godwit Limosa limosa present on Cell A of Dryham Ings were the first, followed by a Greenfinch Chloris chloris along the New Workings. A Corn Bunting Emberiza calandra was in the small tree in the North Field, whilst two Red Kite Milvus milvus sauntered south along the eastern ridge, one eventually drifting over the reserve. Other highlights included two Bullfinch Pyrrhula pyrrhula at the south-west corner of Carp Lake and a Coal Tit Periparus ater visiting the Maize Field Feeders. The Ruff Calidris pugnax was on Village Lake, whilst a single Pink-footed Goose Anser brachyrhynchus was with the Greylag Geese Anser anser on Main Lake. First insects of the year for the reserve were two 7-spot Ladybird Coccinella septempunctata found along the Lane. An unusual sighting in the large Ash tree along the lane was the Stoat Mustela erminea, at least half way up the tree when I fist caught sight of it, as it descended to the ground.
