North Cave Wetlands – 10/02/2019

A mainly sunny afternoon visit with a gentle north-westerly breeze blowing. Temperature around eight degrees C.

A nice walk around the reserve during the afternoon, a reserve tick being a nice reward in the shape of a Woodcock Scolopax rusticola, which flew over the south-west corner of Main Lake. Two other reserve year ticks included at least three Oystercatcher Haematopus ostralegus seen on Cell A of Dryham Ings, as well as Main and Village Lake. Lesser Black-backed Gull Larus fuscus was the third tick. Some other good birds on the reserve included the two Black-tailed Godwit Limosa limosa on Cell A, one of which was also present on Village Lake. The Ruff Calidris pugnax still present on Village Lake. Male and female Brambling Fringilla montifringilla were showing under the Maize Field Feeders. Two Lesser Redpoll Acanthis cabaret flew over the south-west corner of Main Lake, whilst a Red Kite Milvus milvus was present along the eastern end of the site.
