North Cave Wetlands – 23/02/2019

A sunny afternoon with a gentle southerly breeze blowing, temperature around 12 degrees C.

Nice to have a few invertebrates coaxed out by the warmer conditions. Good numbers of 7-spot Ladybird Coccinella septempunctata making the most of the warming sun, the only other beetle found was Olibrus corticalis. Three species of Bumblebee active comprising Buff-tailed Bumblebee Bombus terrestris, Garden Bumblebee Bombus hortorum and Tree Bumblebee Bombus hypnorum. A Green Shieldbug Palomena prasina was found along the western path, still in its winter colour form. Finally several Eristalis tenax hoverflies were active around the reserve.

Bird-wise the highlight was a Black-tailed Godwit Limosa limosa on Village Lake. Definite changes around the reserve since my last visit include numerous Black-headed Gull Chroicocephalus ridibundus, now getting ready for the breeding season. Great Crested Grebe Podiceps cristatus back on site, one pair already nest building on Cell A. Several pairs of Oystercatcher Haematopus ostralegus now spread around the reserve.
