Tophill Low – 27/02/2019

A sunny day with a gentle south-westerly breeze blowing. Temperature peaking at around 15 degrees C.

The Red-necked Grebe Podiceps grisegena was still present, though now on ‘D’ Reservoir compared to my last visit. Cetti’s Warbler Cettia cetti was present on North Marsh, with a second bird singing on South Marsh East. A Marsh Harrier Circus aeruginosus flew south along the river at North Marsh. Two pairs of Bullfinch Pyrrhula pyrrhula showed well along the path to Hempholme Meadows, Little Egret Egretta garzetta the only species of note on the meadows themselves. Still plenty of wildfowl on the reservoirs, always nice to get good views of the Goldeneye Bucephala clangula. Forty-two Curlew Numenius arquata were on Watton Nature Reserve, along with four Redshank Tringa totanus and a single Snipe Gallinago gallinago.

Insect-wise the only species noted was my first Comma Polygonia c-album of the year on the western side of ‘O’ Reservoir.
