Blacktoft Sands – 02/04/2019

A morning of light rain, eventually clearing though remaining overcast in the afternoon. A gentle westerly breeze blowing, temperature reaching seven degrees C.

Most of the action on the reserve was down at the Ousefleet with a good selection of waders present. Highlight was the Greenshank Tringa nebularia that dropped in, being the first of the year. 32 Black-tailed Godwit Limosa limosa also alighted and spent some time feeding on the grass to the left of the hide. A single Ruff Calidris pugnax also making an appearance here. Other waders included Curlew Numenius arquata, Oystercatcher Haematopus ostralegus, Redshank Tringa totanus and Snipe Gallinago gallinago. Another first of the year here was a single White Wagtail Motacilla alba alba. On Marshland Black-headed Gull Chroicocephalus ridibundus were voiciferous, staking claim to the islands. Three Goldeneye Bucephala clangula and two Avocet Recurvirostra avosetta were the other notable birds on the lagoon. At Xerox 12 Ruff C. pugnax were feeding on the grass bank in front of the lagoon. At Townsend ten Avocet R. avosetta were on the island, along with five Snipe G. gallinago. From Singleton several Marsh Harrier Circus aeruginosus were displaying and busy nest building in the reedbed, and were observered from all the hides on the reserve. Other birds of interest included several singing Cetti’s Warbler Cettia cetti along with a single singing Chiffchaff Phylloscopus collybita. There was a westerly movement of Sand Martin Riparia riparia, picking up as the afternoon progressed.
