North Cave Wetlands – 06/04/2019

A morning visit, starting off bright before gradually clouding over, a light northerly wind blowing. Temperature reaching 11 degrees C.

A great visit to the reserve, plenty of invertebrates to get to grips with. Highlights included Creeping Thistle Lacebug Tingis ampliata along the North Path, a new species for me, along with a potential Grey-banded Mning Bee Andrena cf. denticulata. Several species were new for the year (NFY) including Celery Leaf Beetle Phaedon tumidulus and Sphaeroderma testaceum along the Northern Path. Seven species of Bumblebee around the reserve with Early Bumblebee Bombus pratorum and Vestal Cuckoo Bee Bombus vestalis both NFY. Moth-wise a Grey Shoulder-knot Lithophane ornitopus was a new species for the reserve list, found on the steps to Turret Hide. Field Damsel Bug Nabis ferus and Eristalis pertinax rounded off the Invertebrate NFYs. Before moving on to the birds a Weasel Mustela nivalis which ran across the Butterfly path was a new reserve record for me.
