North Cave Wetlands – 07/04/2019

An evening visit of light cloud and a gentle north-easterly breeze blowing. Temperature around 11 degrees C.

Not a great visit for invertebrates, though not unexpected as the temperature drops off on an evening, only three species recorded; 7-spot Ladybird Coccinella septempunctata, Buff-tailed Bumblebee Bombus terrestris and hoverfly Eristalis tenax.

Bird-wise Swallow Hirundo rustica was the only new species for the year, one over the north field and another over Silt Lagoon. Four Mediterranean Gull Larus melanocephalus were on Village Lake. The immature Whooper Swan Cygnus cygnus appeared to drop in here as it came in from over the Wolds to the east. Three Little Ringed Plover Charadrius dubius were on Reedbed Lake, with a further individual on Cell A of Dryham Ings. The Cetti’s Warbler Cettia cetti was still singing from the south-east corner of Main Lake.
