North Cave Wetlands – 05/05/2019

An overcast morning with a light north-westerly breeze blowing. Temperature around 10 degrees C.

Despite the conditions I fared better than expected on this visit, with several new species (NEW) and firsts for year (NFY). Dragonfly-wise a couple of Red-eyed Damselfly Erythromma najas were NFY around Carp Lake. A couple of beetles found were first for me, Longitarsus dorsalis and a Phyllotreta sp. Tropiphorus terricola and Brown Leaf Weevil Phyllobius oblongus were NFY. Fruitlet Mining Tortrix Pammene rhediella was a new moth species, and appears to be quite scarce in Yorkshire. Hoverfly numbers are slowly building with Eupeodes latifasciatus and Melanostoma scalare added to the year-list. Finally had a dabble with a few Craneflies, with Tiger Cranefly Nephrotoma flavescens, Ptychoptera contaminata, Tipula varipennis, Tipula vernalis and Tipula vittata all noted.
