North Cave Wetlands – 09/05/2019

A dull and overcast day with occasional drizzle, a light to gentle northerly breeze blowing. Temperature around eight degrees C.

Wasn’t expecting to have a great insect day due to the weather, though fared considerably better than expected, with a few new firsts for me (NEW), several new to my reserve list (NFS), plus some new for the year (NFY). Three True Bugs added to the reserve list; with Parent Bug Elasmucha grisea found along the western path, with four Harpocera thoracica also on the western path. A Spear Thistle Lacebug Tingis┬ácardui was found along the northen path. Fly-wise Bibio leucopterus was a new species, with Cranefly Nephrotoma appendiculata added to the site list. A Mothfly Psychodidae sp. was NFY. A Sphaerophoria sp. female and Cheilosia variabilis were added to the years Hoverfly list. Other NFYs included Hawthorn Leaf Beetle Lochmaea crataegi along the northern Path, along with a Moth Common Roller Ancylis badiana. A couple of Crustaceans were added to my species list with Common Pill Woodlouse Armadillidium vulgare and Common Striped Woodlouse Philoscia muscorum along the western path. Finally a Kentish Snail Monacha cantiana was NFY.

Main target for the day was Black Tern Chlidonias niger, which duly obliged on Main Lake. Sanderling Calidris alba was new addition to my reserve list, one present on Reedbed Lake with two Dunlin Calidris alpina, the latter both NFY.
