Flamborough North Cliffs and Bempton Cliffs – 20/06/2019

A bright start eventually clouding over at Bempton, a moderate south-westerly breeze blowing. Temperature around 14 degrees C.

A trip up to the seabird colonies at Flamborough North Cliffs (FNC) and Bempton Cliffs (BC) provided plenty of photo opportunities. The Yorkshire Wildlife Trust North Cliffs reserve provide excellent views of the Auk species, especially around Briel Nook. However to see the Gannets well, a visit to Bempton Cliffs RSPB reserve is required. Alca torda Razorbill, Fratercula arctica Puffin and Rissa tridactyla Kittiwake were all new for the year (NFY). Always worth a visit at this time of year just for the seabird city spectacle. Whilst there, also searched the cliff top grasslands for interesting invertebrates, managing to find a few new species to add to the life list (NEW). Beetle-wise Creophilus maxillosus Carrion Beetle was the highlight (BC), with Cantharis lateralis, a Soldier Beetle, also new to me (FNC). A few moths were found at FNC, with Eucosma conterminana Pale Lettuce Bell (NEW) apparently a new species for the area. Other good finds were Grapholita lunulana Northern Crescent Piercer (NEW), Camptogramma bilineata Yellow Shell (NFY), Cydia nigricana Pea Moth (NFY) and Euproctis similis Yellow-tail caterpillar (NFY). Several species of Butterflies active, though Maniola jurtina Meadow Brown at Thornwick Pool was (NFY). A couple of True Bugs were added to the life list with Leptopterna ferrugata and a tentative Peritrechus cf. nubilus found at Flamborough, with Nabis flavomarginatus Broad Damselbug being (NFY).
