Skipwith Common – 12/09/2019

A sunny start eventually clouding over, a moderate south-westerly breeze blowing. Temperature around 22 degrees C.

A good visit with several new species for me (NEW), with a few firsts for the year (NFY). Spent time on the heath looking for True Bugs, managing to find four new species, best of these was Coranus subapterus Heath Assassin Bug. The other three were Orthotylus ericetorum, a Mirid Bug which was numerous on the Heather; Grypotes puncticollis a Leafhopper found on the Scots Pines and Conomelus anceps, a Planthopper which was prolific on the Juncus around one of the ponds. An Atolmis rubricollis Red-necked Footman caterpillar was found on the heather, however as this species is a Lichen feeder, it had probably been dislodge from one of the nearby Oaks or Pines due to the strong gusts of wind. The final new species was a Jumping Spider Evarcha falcata, several found in the heather. Firsts for the year were Chilocorus bipustulatus Heather Ladybird, Helophilus trivittatus a migratory Hoverfly and several Araneus quadratus Four-spot Orb-weaver spiders. Conocephalus fuscus Long-winged Cone-head was a notable find, my first for the site, and third this year, with records from two other East Yorkshire sites, appears to have spread rapidly into suitable habitat.
