North Cave Wetlands – 03/11/2019

A morning visit starting off misty before brightening up, with still conditions. Temperature reaching around 10 degrees C.

A few invertebrates eventually appeared late morning once the mist cleared. Sympetrum striolatum Common Darter still in double figures, mainly around Carp Lake and along the Lane. Three Palomena prasina Green Shieldbug, one still a nymph, along with two Zicrona caerulea Blue Shieldbug were present along Dyrham Lane. The shieldbugs will over-winter as adults in the long vegetation along the lane, a valuable piece of habitat, often vegetation gets cut back to ground level at this time of yesr, which is then no use for overwintering invertebrates. Single Coccinella septempunctata 7-spot Ladybird and Eristalis tenax also along the lane.

Bird-wise the drake Anas carolinensis Green-winged Teal was still present on Island Lake, eventually waking up and showing well. A single Emberiza citrinella Yellowhammer and Picus viridis Green Woodpecker were along the north path. Two Bucephala clangula Goldeneye were on Carp Lake. Several skeins of Anser brachyrhynchus Pink-footed Goose passed over the reserve, mainly heading south.
