Garden Wildlife – 27/02/13

Not the usual site visit blog, but worthy of entry, was the surprise sight of a different species showing interest in our nest box. I’ve not recorded Tree Sparrow Passer montanus in the garden since 2005, so it was nice to see a pair prospecting the box this morning, and showing real interest. Over the years the box has been used by Blue Tits Parus caeruleus, but more recently by Great Tits Parus major. Whilst the Tree Sparrows P. montanus investigate the box, a pair of Great Tits P. major were protesting about their presence, the sparrows clearly having the upper hand. Will be interesting to see if this develops into a nesting record.
