Allerthrope Common

A Yorkshire Wildlife Trust Site - acidic wet/dry heath, mire, grassland and woodland with ponds. Species include:- Emerald Damselfly, Large Red Damselfly, Blue-tailed Damselfly, Azure Damselfly, Common Blue Damselfly, Common Hawker, Migrant Hawker, Southern Hawker, Brown Hawker, Emperor Dragonfly, Four-spotted Chaser, Broad-bodied Chaser, Common Darter, Ruddy Darter and Black Darter. Access from A1079 Hull -York Road, towards Sutton-upon-Derwent and Thornton; 1st left towards Thornton. Park 1/2 mile on right.  Cross road and walk track by Forest Enterprise gate. Take ride on left to junction with line of pylons. Reserve is along track on right.  Grid ref SE 761475. 

Back Delfin, North Cliffe Carr

Several short sections of the old Market Weighton Canal, a running stream, rough grassland and a public right of way make this spot an ideal location for dragonflies. Species include:- Banded Demoiselle, Emerald Damselfly, Large Red Damselfly, Azure Damselfly, Common Blue Damselfly, Blue-tailed Damselfly, Migrant Hawker, Southern Hawker and Common Darter.

Bransholme Fishing Lake, East Hull

A Council Site (TA111348). Emerald Damselfly, Large Red Damselfly, Blue-tailed Damselfly, Azure Damselfly, Common Blue Damselfly, Red-eyed Damselfly, Migrant Hawker, Brown Hawker, Emperor Dragonfly, Four-spotted Chaser, Black-tailed Skimmer, Common Darter and Ruddy Darter.

Eastrington Ponds

Local Nature Reserve at (SE7829). Emerald Damselfly, Large Red Damselfly, Blue-tailed Damselfly, Common Blue Damselfly, Azure Damselfly, Red-eyed Damselfly, Brown Hawker, Southern Hawker, Migrant Hawker, Emperor Dragonfly, Four-spotted Chaser, Black-tailed Skimmer, Common Darter and Ruddy Darter.

Filey Dams

A Yorkshire Wildlife Trust Site - Accessed via Wharfedale road off the A1039. Species include Banded Demoiselle (vagrant), Emerald Damselfly, Large Red Damselfly (vagrant), Azure Damselfly, Common Blue Damselfly, Blue-tailed Damselfly, Common Hawker (vagrant), Migrant Hawker, Southern Hawker, Brown Hawker, Emperor Dragonfly, Four-spotted Chaser, Broad-bodied Chaser, Black-tailed Skimmer, Common Darter, Red-veined Darter (vagrant), Yellow-winged Darter (vagrant), Ruddy Darter and Black Darter (vagrant).

Hornsea Mere

Parking at Kirkholme Point at (TA193470). Blue-tailed Damselfly, Common Blue Damselfly, Brown Hawker, Migrant Hawker, Emperor Dragonfly, Black-tailed Skimmer, Ruddy Darter and Red-veined Darter (vagrant).

Leven Canal

Off the Beverley to Bridlington Road A1035 in Leven (TA1045). Species include Red-eyed Damselfly, Blue-tailed Damselfly, Azure Damselfly, Common Blue Damselfly, Migrant Hawker, Southern Hawker, Brown Hawker, Emperor Dragonfly, Four-spotted Chaser, Common Darter and Ruddy Darter.

North Cave Wetlands

A Yorkshire Wildlife Trust Site - The site is still being developed, primarily for birds. A small lilly pond has been created for dragonflies along the northern path of the reserve. Species include Banded Demoiselle (local vagrant), Emerald Damselfly, Blue-tailed Damselfly, Azure Damselfly (scarce), Common Blue Damselfly, Migrant Hawker, Southern Hawker, Brown Hawker, Emperor Dragonfly, Four-spotted Chaser, Broad-bodied Chaser (scarce), Black-tailed Skimmer, Common Darter, Red-veined Darter(vagrant), Ruddy Darter and Black Darter (local vagrant).

Oak Road Lake, Hull

Access from Beverley Road, Hull via Beresford Avenue (TA092322). SMALL RED-EYED DAMSELFLY, Emerald Damselfly, Blue-tailed Damselfly, Common Blue Damselfly,  Brown Hawker, Migrant Hawker, Emperor Dragonfly, Four-spotted Chaser, Black-tailed Skimmer, Common Darter and Ruddy Darter.

Paull Holme Strays

Key area is the pond at the car park and soak dyke behind the flood bank (TA177252). Emerald Damselfly, Blue-tailed Damselfly, Common Blue Damselfly, Azure Damselfly, Southern Hawker, Migrant Hawker, Emperor Dragonfly, Four-spotted Chaser, Black-tailed Skimmer, Common Darter and Ruddy Darter.

Pocklington Canal

Walk along the canal bank from the picnic area until you reach a road crossing the canal.  Species include Banded Demoiselle, Large Red Damselfly, Red-eyed Damselfly, Blue-tailed Damselfly, Azure Damselfly, Common Blue Damselfly, Common Hawker, Migrant Hawker, Southern Hawker, Brown Hawker, Emperor Dragonfly, Four-spotted Chaser and Common Darter.

Pulfin and High Eske Nature Reserve

A Yorkshire Wildlife Trust Site - Accessed via Tickton by walking along the River Hull bank (TA050440). Emerald Damselfly, Large Red Damselfly, Blue-tailed Damselfly, Common Blue Damselfly, Azure Damselfly, Red-eyed Damselfly, Brown Hawker, Southern Hawker, Migrant Hawker, Emperor Dragonfly, Four-spotted Chaser, Black-tailed Skimmer, Common Darter, Yellow-winged Darter (vagrant) and Ruddy Darter.

River Hertford

(Map)
Important in the East Riding due to it being the only site where Beautiful Demoiselle can be found (TA020808). Other species present include Banded Demoiselle, Blue-tailed Damselfly, Azure Damselfly and Southern Hawker.

Saltmarshe Delph

A Yorkshire Wildlife Trust Site - Small Yorkshire Wildlife Trust reserve south of Howden (SE774248). Emerald Damselfly, Large Red Damselfly, Blue-tailed Damselfly, Common Blue Damselfly, Azure Damselfly, Red-eyed Damselfly, Brown Hawker, Southern Hawker, Emperor Dragonfly, Four-spotted Chaser, Black-tailed Skimmer, Common Darter and Ruddy Darter.

Skipwith Common

A Yorkshire Wildlife Trust Site - Low lying heathland (SE660370). Emerald Damselfly. Large Red Damselfly, Blue-tailed Damselfly, Common Blue Damselfly, Common Hawker, Brown Hawker, Southern Hawker, Migrant Hawker, Emperor Dragonfly, Four-spotted Chaser, Black-tailed Skimmer, Common Darter, Ruddy Darter and Black Darter.

Spurn Point

A Yorkshire Wildlife Trust Site - The canal zone and scrapes in Clubley's Field (TA4115).  Species include the commoner damselflies, Emperor Dragonfly, Migrant Hawker, Four-spotted Chaser, Black-tailed Skimmer, Common Darter, Ruddy Darter and Red-veined Darter (virtually guaranteed every summer) , occasional Southern Hawker,  Broad-bodied Chaser and Black Darter.  In some years falls of migrating dragonflies occur, including rarities.  In 2003 2 records of Banded Demoiselle, 1 each of Norfolk Hawker, Downy Emerald and Black Darter.

Tophill Low Nature Reserve

A Yorkshire Water Site - Signposted off the A164 between Beverley and Driffield (TA0748).  A Yorkshire Water site, with reservoirs, scrapes, ponds and ditches.  Species include Banded Demoiselle, Emerald Damselfly, Large Red Damselfly, Red-eyed Damselfly, Blue-tailed Damselfly, Azure Damselfly, Common Blue Damselfly, Migrant Hawker, Southern Hawker, Brown Hawker, Emperor Dragonfly, Four-spotted Chaser, Broad-bodied Chaser, Black-tailed Skimmer, Common Darter, Ruddy Darter and Black Darter (vagrant).
